Digital Britain report

The government recently announced in their “Digital Britain” report that all residential properties in Britain are to gain access to high speed broadband over the next 8 years, proving still that the digital age is truly developing.

This brings a new way of working from an IT perspective. From personal to business use, the Internet is used not only as a way of gathering information, it is also used as a way of networking, sharing and collaborating. Greater access to broadband technologies will help develop and change the way we all communicate with each other.

Personal use of the internet helps people keep in touch with friends and family, no matter where they live in the world. Social networking sites and Instant Messaging (with the facility to video call) enable us to do this. Businesses can also embrace this technology to help improve their service to their customers, stay informed on the latest news in their industry and reach out to new contacts. You can also improve communications between team members with unified comms and save costs at the same time, especially if you have members of your team working from home.

The 50p tax per month on fixed lines is expected to bring in around £170m according to the BBC news report which apparently is slightly off target from the required budget according to experts. Whether this means an increase in the cost of broadband services from suppliers to fund the project we don’t know…but certainly the technology is out there today for the people who have access to it – as more and more people get online the need for an online presence grows for individuals and businesses alike.
